NOTHING WORTH KNOWING CAN
EVER BE TAUGHT IN A CLASSROOM
I obtained my first camera as a hand me down from my father. It was a classic Canon AE-1 with multiple lenses. Although I didn't take any photography courses before starting out into the world with it, I was fascinated with what I could capture. There is something so very special about film cameras in that you have to work for the gratification; it is not instant, as we are so accustomed to now. I remember shooting mulitple rolls at a time, and the heartbreak when a roll of film did not turn out. It is the mistakes that I made in my infancy that created some of my most prized photos; the unexpected miracle. I became in love with the details of items, the small and forgotten about things that we see on a daily basis that we walk by without truely "seeing". I began my journey into design through photography and this same idea of details making the whole picture. Design allows me to create a world that photography lets me capture. Going from darkroom to computer has been an ever changing transition that I am always learning from.
Throughout my life I have explored many other platforms for art including printmaking, illustration, pottery and painting. To be able to use all these mediums and combine them on the computer was my main interest when I started graphic design. I have been blessed to be able to work with many great people over the years, all with different backgrounds in art, creating and collaborating on pieces. My experiences throughout the years has become more refined and clean as I began to find that everything is just a system of signs and what is most important is how we portray those signs.
"It is not what you look at that matters, it is what you see" Henry David Thoreau
This quote and the idea of simple, clean "signs" are always in the back of my head wheter I'm creating a website, a logo or making art.
